Time to Show Some More Appreciation

In every school, there are the adults students may not always name—but always remember. The ones who steady a rough morning, find the right book, offer a kind word in the hallway, or quietly keep the entire system running. As educators, we often focus on classroom instruction, but a truly caring school environment is a collective effort.

This week is a perfect opportunity to recognize the essential roles that help shape a culture where students feel seen, supported, and safe.

Recognizing the People Who Make Care Visible

Below are key staff members whose daily work contributes directly to a caring classroom climate and the dates most districts use to recognize their valuable support of us each school day:

How Each Role Builds a Caring Classroom

Paraprofessionals
Paraprofessionals are often the closest instructional partners to students who need additional support. They build trust through consistency—working one-on-one, de-escalating challenging moments, and celebrating small wins. Their presence ensures that every student has access to learning in a way that feels achievable and affirming.

School Librarians
Librarians curate more than books—they create access. Whether helping a student find themselves reflected in a story or guiding research skills, they foster belonging and curiosity. A well-run library becomes a safe space, particularly for students who need quiet, structure, or connection.

Administrative Assistants
Often the first point of contact for families and visitors, administrative assistants set the tone for the entire school. For students and families alike, they are problem-solvers, comfort-givers, and logistical anchors. A calm, welcoming front office signals to every student, every family, and every community member they are entering a place where they matter.

School Cafeteria Workers
Cafeteria staff interact with nearly every student, every day. A smile, remembering a name, or a quick check-in can shift a student’s entire day. For many students, especially those who may be facing challenging homes and food insecurity, these adults provide not just meals, but dignity and care.

School Nurses
School nurses operate at the intersection of health and learning. Beyond treating illness, they often serve as emotional first responders—supporting students through anxiety, chronic conditions, and unexpected challenges.

Simple, Meaningful Ways to Show Appreciation

Recognition doesn’t need to be elaborate to be impactful—small, consistent gestures often matter most. Here are five practical ways classrooms and students can show appreciation:

  1. Student-Created Notes or Cards
Encourage students to write brief, specific thank-you messages. Authenticity matters more than polish.
  2. Classroom Shout-Out Board
Dedicate a space where students can publicly recognize staff members and the ways they’ve helped them.
  3. Morning Announcement Mentions
Coordinate with school leadership to include short appreciations tied to each role during announcements.
  4. “Caught Caring” Moments
Have students identify and share moments when these staff members made a difference in their day.
  5. Collective Classroom Gesture
As a class, contribute something small—a poster, a shared letter, or a simple token—to show unified appreciation.

A Culture Worth Building

A caring classroom doesn’t exist in isolation. It is reinforced in hallways, offices, cafeterias, libraries, and health rooms. When students see adults valuing one another, they internalize that care is part of the culture—not just a one-time lesson.

This week, the goal isn’t perfection or grand gestures. It’s helping students notice the network of people who support them—and giving them the language and opportunity to say, “Thank you.”

Because in the end, a caring school is not defined by any single role—but by how all of them work together to ensure every student feels they belong.
